Do you really need a 4.0?
I mean, academically speaking, that’s a bit excessive. Many students (high school and college) do just fine with a 2 - 3.0, and they go off to live very stable and fulfilling lives and have decent jobs that pay a decent wage, whereas a student with a 1.0 or less does not fare as well. So, really, is it fair that one student has a 4.0 while another student only as a 1.0? Maybe that latter student is really trying, but just struggles because he doesn’t have the same means as a 4.0 student and had to take on a job while the 4.0 student had time to study. Is that fair? Or maybe he’s just not as smart or able as the 4.0 student. Doesn’t he deserve a hand-up? Heck, maybe the 1.0 student is just plain stupid and foolishly squanders his study time to instead indulge in his whims and luxuries. So what? Doesn’t he deserve a little equality? Maybe the 4.0 student inherited his intelligence, by virtue of having parents that contributed a genetic dice roll that made him a prodigy. Is that fair? Is that equality of opportunity?
No.
So, why not redistribute grade point averages a bit and level the playing field? I mean, that’s fair isn’t it? Only the top class of students have those 3.5 - 4.0 GPAs, while the middle and lower classes struggle with lower grades. It’s a good plan, don’t you think? And it doesn’t even have to be consenting. Maybe one could even appeal to the school officials to levy this requirement on the school’s best performers. You know, pass some kind of rule that says that if you’re in the highest student grade point brackets, that you’ll automatically have your GPA lowered to be redistributed among the lower performing students. Maybe the school could even threaten to suspend or expel students who don’t contribute their fair share of GPA to the others.
I mean, that’s fair, don’t you think?
